The three Cs: carrot, celery and cucumber, were actually a hit with our skeptical teenager. Revitalized by the prospect that adequate intakes of wheatgrass and other juices could prepare me for my next bout with the scale, we brought home several of the blended juices, which can be ordered by the pint.

Ham and Swiss on rye ($3.50), crab salad ($3.95), tuna salad ($2.50), fresh fruit plate and garden chef salads (each $3.95) round out the modest bill of fare. Each sandwich is served with a fruit kabob. A larger club sandwich ($4.25) had layers of ham, turkey, Swiss and cheddar, tomato slices, sprouts and mushrooms, served on pumpernickel. The three-cheese veggie ($3.25) includes thin slices of Swiss, cheddar and provolone with avocado, sprouts, cucumber, fresh sliced mushrooms and radishes. The slightly sweet sourdough was our choice. The turkey and avocado ($3.75) came with processed turkey breast, slices of avocado, provolone cheese, sprouts on a variety of Granite Bakery breads. The list of 40 things titled "What's so great about wheatgrass juice?" claimed that the last item was a chlorophyl-rich ingredient that could cure just about any malady, from high blood pressure to acne. I didn't quite feel so guilty about postponing my scheduled doctor's appointment for a weigh-in as I sipped the Pappa Hopper concoction, an intriguing and tasty combination of apple, banana, ginger and wheatgrass juices.
